District declaration of Muslim areas in Indian Punjab, BJB protests

Chandigarh: The government of the Indian state of Punjab has announced the creation of a new district in the Muslim-majority area of Malir Kotla, which has infuriated the extremist Hindu nationalist party BJP. According to media reports, the total population of Punjab is Pune 30 million and Muslims are less than 2%. However, Malir Kotla is the only area on the border where the Muslim population is over 70%. Announcing the formation of Malir Kotla as the new district of the state on the occasion of Eid, Chief Minister Amrinder Singh said that there are now 23 districts in Punjab.

Before the partition of India, Malir Kotla was a state of Muslim Nawabs and the long standing demand for district status was recognized. Chief Minister Amander Singh said he was happy that the government had declared Malir Kotla a new district on the occasion of Eid This 23rd district of the state is of historical significance. On the other hand, the hardline Hindu nationalist party, the BJP, has sharply criticized the Congress party for being discriminatory. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath wrote in a tweet that any discrimination on the basis of religion and beliefs is against the spirit of the Constitution of India. The formation of Malir Kotla is a reflection of the sectarian politics of the Congress. Meanwhile, several other BJP leaders have also termed the Punjab government's decision as sectarian. In response, Amrinder Singh has denied all the allegations and sharply criticized the BJP.

He said in a statement that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath did not know anything about Punjab and needed to stay away from state affairs. He said that Punjab was much better than Uttar Pradesh where the BJP's sectarian and destructive government had been trying for four years to promote religious differences.
